About this site:
This site is a collection of tools, demonstrations and knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. You need to have a valid login to use most of it. It doesn't look very pretty, but the back-end is where the action is. There are no static pages and no permanent links. All content is pulled from a database or generated from a PHP file and served to the browser using the ajax technique. It was low on my list of priorities, but the cross-browser scripting is now complete. This site should work in all major browsers at standard resolutions.
Much of what this site does is accomplished by using a MySQL database to shuttle commands and responses across several computers in different locations. The site you are viewing now is hosted at CrystalTech webhosting in Phoenix, Arizona (they have a phenomenal support department, by the way!). Computers that don't directly host the site contribute to its content and functionality by running a custom-written java program that interacts with the database hosted at CrystalTech. One computer is in my car. It feeds GPS data and images to this domain where it is reviewable by registered users to whom I have given such permissions. Another is my media server at home that serves as a repository for my music, logs and events in my home. This domain has been my sandbox for many years and I try not to remove any content. Much of the site was written while I was a teenager, as I have been an amateur hardware engineer since I was in high school. Most of the most recent things are software, and much of it is not here yet.
Using things:
In general, all the red icons have actions associated with them. If you are just here looking around, there are various write-ups and source code for things I have built in the menu titled "Content from my old site".
Following login, music manager and location will be visible in the car menu if you have permissions to these tools. The location tool gives the (nearly) live location of my car if it has an Internet connection. Music manager allows me access to all of my music at home. Image Capture is a tool that shows the pictures my car has taken of its environment.
Contract work:
Need something written? Email me for a copy of my current resume. You can get an idea about the type of work I do by looking through my projects, also listed in this website. I am always available for interesting contract work. You may contact me with such requests at Josh.Lindsay@gmail.com. My hourly rate is not fixed, but floats with inflation in the US dollar, which I am forced to accept. I therefore use the price of silver to give a stable value for the worth of my time.
My rate is based upon the five-day moving average of the price of one troy ounce of 0.999 fine silver as tracked by the ticker symbol SLV. I will gladly accept payment for my time directly in ounces of silver. If you wish to pay me in Federal Reserve Notes (dollar bills), the current cost of one hour of my time is $1.370. I will happily entertain any amount of inquiry regarding my choice to use this system of pricing.
Here is the equation that was used to arrive at this number:
